I just purchased a 2013 KTM 690 Duke, owners manual recommends Motorex 10w-60 or 10w-50 synthetic. I called my local KTM dealer and spoke with the parts dept. and asked if they had Motorex 10w-60 mineral based for the break-in period. I was going to change the oil at 600 After spilling coolant and water all over the garage floor, I figured out how to flush and change the coolant in my 690 SMC R.. I was unable to find any video or posts about the process and the shop manual does not address working on the engine in the bike, so thought I would share what I found. Compared to adjusting valves on other bikes I User manual never says engine oil change every 5000kms. If you use normal engine oil then change every 150****700 kms. If you use synthetic engine oil then you can change engine oil every 3000 I had this problem as well. Solution is hard to find, but once you know about it it’s easy. Just hover over the “settings” tab in the UI, and hold the set button until the reset service interval screen pops up. Set the interval to your preference, and then hold the set button again until the menu closes. My question is regarding its oil change interval. Both KTM riders and KTM importer recommend changing engine oil of 690 every thousand km or at least every 2,000 km while the manual suggests changing it every 10,000km after first service at first 1,000km. Because it is a combined sump, 15 hrs of hard trail riding will leave the oil full of clutch liner which clogs the pickup screen and starves the cam of oil. So, interim oil changes & frequent inspections we can do ourselves but off to the dealer for 600 mile check & major intervals from there on. Btw, got my new bike Friday but only have 2 miles before my garage door broke & couldn't budge it until the repair guy came yesterday. They use synthetic oil so can normally take more k's. but like was said some don't ride a lot of miles or Kilometres , so in that case every 12 months. if you do the miles quick , like say 30k per year 15k between service ok. D. On road, a lot of sand, some small trail, and a lot of thin snow over sand. I change my oil when it starts to look darker Sometimes 15 hours, sometimes 25. Depends how you ride. I should add, I was a honda mechanic for over a year before now I'm a diesel mechanic. Just use high quality oil, grease the bearings/ bushings, and don't slip the clutch. .
